Cicadas are Here, There and Everywhere (Depending where you are): 17 year cicadas began emergence last week. These insects while a marvel in the insect world, are also capable of doing considerable damage to young fruit trees, grape vines, and blueberry bushes. After mating they begin to deposit their eggs in slits along small diameter branches. Thin branches which are loaded with fruit weight and damaged by egg laying can break. Some growers have asked about damage and what they can do to prevent it. Most egg laying is starting this week.

Fruit IPM for 9/12/2020
Codling Moth (CM): Concern for internal worms, mostly codling moth, remains only for the latest varieties that ripen during October. Any grower with trap counts that exceed 5 moths per trap should still be treating for those latest varieties. Since we are either in or close to harvest, short PHI materials are important. CM effective materials with 7 (or less days PHI include: Altacor (5), Assail (7), Baythroid (7), Delegate (7), Exirel (3), Imidan (7), Leverage (7), Tombstone (7), and Madex (0, needs repeated applications). Stink Bugs Apples and Peaches: Populations are little changed since last week, although slightly lower in most areas. Hot spots are starting to show up to 3% damage in southern county apples. Hot spots also exist in Morris and Middlesex Counties. In order to prevent damage growers need weekly BMSB effective materials, especially on the block edges that have woods borders. The most effective materials for apples include: Danitol, Declare, Endigo, Lambda-Cy, Lannate (short residual), Leverage, Mustang Maxx, Proaxis, Renounce, Tombstone, Voliam Flexi and Warrior II. Stink Bugs Apples and Peaches: BMSB populations are becoming quite high in several northern locations. These populations have the potential to do serious damage to apples where populations are high. Growers with high BMSB populations should consider weekly insecticide applications and/or supplemental border applications with BMSB effective insecticides. [Read more…]
