The Rutgers Homesteading Academy invites you to “Take a Walk with an Expert” at the Rutgers Snyder Research and Extension Farm in Pittstown, NJ (Hunterdon County). Join Dr. Megan Muehlbauer, Hunterdon County Agricultural Agent, for an educational tour of the orchards on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Fruit trees can be a great addition to a farm or homestead in New Jersey, where growing conditions are optimal for several kinds of tree fruit including peaches, apples, cherries, and plums. Tree fruit production is knowledge-intensive, however, so attendees will be introduced to important topics like:
- Site selection
- Soil fertility
- Selecting plant material (rootstock, variety, source)
- Trellis, pruning, and training
- Pest management
- Fruit thinning
We will meet at the farm office before loading into wagons to head up to the orchards. The tour will include several stops, some of which require us to offload from the wagons to get a closer look. We will end the evening with a wagon ride loop around the farm. Wagon space is limited to 35 attendees so pre-registration is required!
