Vegetable IPM Update 09/28/22

Sweet Corn

Nightly distribution of adult corn earworm using blacklight trapsCorn earworm (CEW) moth captures from both blacklight traps and pheromone traps continue to decline with consistently cooler night temperatures.  Pheromone traps in northern Warren County and Cumberland County are highest at this time.  Both trap types are in general agreement as to spray schedules.  CEW populations can increase or decline with changes in night temperatures.  Growers should be on alert for large CEW migrations should NJ experience tropical weather systems.   Check this publication weekly for CEW status.  The number of pheromone traps deployed is much lower, resulting in much broader color bands on the map. It is also important to understand that pheromone traps are more sensitive than blacklight traps, and thresholds are adjusted to account for the higher catches typical of this trap type.  Remaining silking  corn is at risk of CEW infestation at this time.  On the blacklight map (left), green areas represent a 3-day silk spray schedule.  On the pheromone map (below right), red represents a 3-day spray schedule, green represents a 4-day schedule. Be sure to access information from this publication in the upcoming weeks to determine how frequently you should treat silking sweet corn to protect it from CEW infestation.

*These recommendations are based on regional catches.  Adhere to tighter spray schedules if indicated by local trap catches.  Synthetic pyrethroids alone should NOT be used for corn earworm (CEW) protection on silking corn, or for fall armyworm (FAW) management at any stage.  Control with these materials is very inconsistent.  Utilize materials in IRAC groups 5 and 28, or combination products that include IRAC group 28 for best control.  See the Sweet Corn section of the 2020-21 Commercial Vegetable Production Guide for selections.

 

Peppers

As of last week, one additional farm had been found with pepper weevil in the Hammonton area.  At one of the earlier infested farms, the weevil population seems to have exploded.  This may be because the pheromone traps weren’t in that location of the field.  The pheromone traps are the best monitoring tool that we have but placing them in a field is difficult.  We try to visualize where vehicles would most likely be slowing down or stopping and set traps in those areas.  Research conducted in the ’90s suggested that 10 traps be set per acre.  On a practical scale, this is undoable. So while pheromone traps are very useful, they are not infallible.

Some farmers have expressed concerns about the lures on the traps that would lure the weevils into the fields.  A pepper field is what the weevils are looking for.  Once in the field, they may be attracted to the traps.  When the first weevil is caught, we don’t know if this is the only weevil or represents some greater number of weevils.

The best control rotations for pepper weevil include Vydate, a neonicotinoid (Actara, Admire, Assail, others), a diamide (Exirel, Harvanta), and possibly Torac.  University of Georgia researchers have found that all populations of pepper weevil that they have tested are resistant to pyrethroids. Since we don’t know where the weevils come from that we find here in New Jersey, farmers probably shouldn’t rely on pyrethroids being effective.  Refer to the Rutgers Fact Sheet,  FS1330: Monitoring and Management of Pepper Weevil in New Jersey (Rutgers NJAES) for more details on monitoring pepper weevil populations.

 

Beet armyworm adults (BAW) continue to be captured over the past week.  Nightly counts include:

Growers in Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties should monitor pepper fields weekly for signs of feeding.  BAW larvae (photo at left) feed in the developing foliage in terminal growth of plants.  Initially, leaves are skeletonized, but as larvae grow, they will move onto fruit and damage these as well.  Beet armyworm adultsBAW is also impacting spinach and other greens in southern counties.  Injury to crops such as beet tops, swiss chard and spinach can be extreme.  As with other armyworms, BAW is difficult to control with pyrethroid insecticides.  Effective materials include spinosyns (IRAC 5) and diamides (IRAC 28).

 

 

 

Pumpkins and Winter Squash

Cucurbit downy mildew (CDM) is active on cucumbers in all parts of the state, and has recently been discovered on summer squash, butternut squash and pumpkins in various counties.  As of Tuesday 9/27, the CDM forecast was for low risk of new infection in all of  NJ.  Heavier dews are conducive to local spread, so fields that appear to have minimal or no infection can become heavily infected quickly.  Should the tropical storm currently in the southeastern US arrive here in any form, we would expect increasing DM pressure.  For regional information on this important disease, see the Cucurbit Downy Mildew Forecast webpage:  http://cdm.ipmpipe.org/.    It is advisable for all growers treat preventively for CDM on all vine crops at this time.

Cucurbit downy mildew

With mature fruit present, growers should check at least weekly for the presence of striped cucumber beetles (photo at right).  This pest, which is important early in the life of the plants, again becomes economically significant with maturing fruit, as it can scar the rinds of pumpkins and other squashes.  If cucumber beetles are found at more than 2 sites in a 10 site sample, and any fruit injury is detected, an insecticide application to prevent further injury may be warranted.  For useful materials, see the Pumpkin and Winter Squash section of the 2022-23 Commercial Guide.  Populations of melon aphids are present in some pumpkin and winter squash fields (see photo below at left).  This pest has the ability to increase to extremely high population levels in fields.  When this happens, their sticky droppings are deposited on fruit below the canopy.  Sooty Striped cucumber beetlesmold fungus grows on this sticky coating, disfiguring fruit.  Additionally, hornets are attracted to the aphid droppings; creating a potential issue in U-pick situations.  Check fields weekly for the presence of melon aphid colonies developing on the undersides of leaves.  If aphids are found in more than one sample site/10 sites, consider an insecticide application to limit population spread.  There are a number of effective materials listed in the Pumpkin and Winter Squash section of the 2022-23 Commercial Guide.  Avoid pyrethroid insecticides for aphids or other insect pests, as these can cause aphids to increase.

 

Cole Crops

Melon aphidsDiamondback moth larvae ((DBM) see photo at right) continue to be the dominant caterpillar pest in many cole crop plantings, although imported cabbageworm, cabbage looper and cross-striped cabbage worm are all present.  DBM can multiply quickly, but cooler temperatures should slow reproduction now.  It is apparent that DBM is not responding to chlorantraniliprole (Coragen) in many parts of the state.  Effective materials continue to be IRAC 5 materials (spinosyns), other IRAC 28 products like Exirel, the IRAC 6 material, ememectin benzoate (Proclaim), and the carbamate (1A) Lannate.  Lannate and Proclain have longer PHIs, so it is best to start with these if a DBM population is present.  Transition to shorter PHI materials like the spinosyns or Exirel as harvest gets closer.  Be sure to check the Cole Crops Section of the 2022-23 Commercial Guide for specifics, as PHI’s and crop labels vary.  It is important to return to treated fields within 2-3 days to assess the efficacy of the insecticide applications.  Effective materials should eliminate DBM larvae within 48 hours.  Any insecticide that controls DBM will also be successful against the other larval species in the crop.

Diamondback moth larvaeAlternaria is increasing, particularly in broccoli and cauliflower plantings.  Rotation away from recent cole crop plantings is a particularly useful cultural control for this disease.  Dispose of all residue after the crop’s useful life is over so that it doesn’t serve as a source for further infections.  Useful fungicides for this disease may be found in the Cole Crops Section of the 2022-23 Commercial Guide.

 

 

 

Allium leaf miner

Allium leaf miner (photo of adult at right) should now be active again in onion, leek, garlic and related crops.  Row covers can be effective at limiting crop exposure to this pest, especially in organic situations where insecticide choices are limited. Allium leaf miner

The second flight should last well into October.  At this time, growers should protect all alliums either with row covers, or weekly insecticide applications.  Insecticides recommended for ALM management include:

Spinosyn materials (Radiant, Entrust (OMRI approved)), pyrethroids (Mustang Maxx, Warrior),  neonicotinoids (Scorpion, Venom) and the insect growth regulator Trigard are labeled for miner control.  The diamide, Exirel, is permitted in NJ under a 2ee label as well.

 

IPM Update 5/11/22

Sweet Corn

IPM Program personnel are finished deploying black light traps and nearing completion of the corn earworm (CEW) pheromone trap network in New Jersey.    Limited collections from traps thus far have captured one corn earworm (CEW) from Chester in Morris County.  We anticipate only limited CEW and  European corn borer (ECB) moths for the near term, and as numbers increase, look for population maps of ECB, CEW, brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB).  The resulting full-state maps will include interpretive information.

IPM Update 5/05/22

Sweet Corn

IPM Program personnel are currently deploying black light and corn earworm (CEW) pheromone trap networks in New Jersey.    Limited collections from traps thus far have not contained any target pests.  We do not anticipate corn earworm (CEW) or  European corn borer (ECB) moths for some time yet, but as numbers increase, look for population maps of ECB, CEW, brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB).  The resulting full-state maps will include interpretive information.

Cole Crops

Fall plantings of cole crops continue to be infested by imported cabbageworm (ICW) and diamondback moth (DBM) larvae.  With DBM being the most destructive larval type at this time.  Cabbage looper (CL-photo at left), cross striped cabbage worm (CSCW-photo at right) and beet armyworm (BAW) see note below)) are also causing injury to these crops, with CSCW becoming more common.

Check 5 consecutive plants each in 10 random locations throughout the planting.  Consider treating if caterpillars are found on 10% or more plants that are in the 0-9 true leaf stage.  From 9-leaf to the early head stage (in broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage) infestations up to 20% may be tolerated.  Once heads begin to form, a 5% threshold should be observed to protect the marketable portion of the plant.  For leafy greens such as collards and kale, 10% plants infested is the threshold throughout.

Some populations of DBM are resistant to carbamate and synthetic pyrethroid insecticides.  The lack of DBM control with these insecticides has been noted in NJ previously.  It is important to distinguish between common cole crop pests for this reason.  DBM larvae grow to a length of approximately 0.5”, and taper toward both ends (see photo at right).  These caterpillars thrash violently when disturbed.  Newer chemistries that specifically target caterpillar pests are effective against DBM as well as all other caterpillar pests of cole crops, including BAW (see photo at left), another species with exhibiting pyrethroid resistance.  These materials include (active ingredient – trade name (IRAC* code)):

Spinosad/Spinetoram – Entrust(OMRI)/ Radiant (5)

Chlorantraniliprole – Coragen (28)

Cyantraniliprole – Exirel (28)

Peppers

Pepper weevil

No additional farms have been reported as being infested.  Currently infested farms are not actively trying to manage the weevil due to the lateness of the season.

Beet armyworm (BAW) captures are fairly low in southern NJ pheromone traps, with the exception of very high catches in the East Vineland area.  This pest can attack peppers, and growers and scouts should check for the presence of heavily damaged leaves near terminal growth on pepper plants.  BAW larvae will be found in the area of damage.  As yet, no injury to peppers has been reported, but BAW are appearing in a number of areas on cole crops and other leafy greens such as chard and beets.  Spinach is also a host for this pest, and all of these crops should be inspected regularly for the presence of larvae and feeding.

Allium Leaf Miner

Peppers

Pepper weevil

Two more farms (Hammonton) were found to be infested with pepper weevil bringing the known total to 4 infested farms.  There does not seem to be a connection between these and the two infested farms in East Vineland, indicating that there were probably two sources for the weevils.  No control efforts are likely for these newest farms.

Beet armyworm (BAW) captures are fairly low in southern NJ pheromone traps, with the exception of East Vineland.  It is noteworthy that BAW larvae caused serious damage to a field of sugar beets near East Vineland two weeks ago (see photo at right).   This pest can attack peppers, and growers and scouts should check for the presence of heavily damaged leaves near terminal growth on pepper plants.  BAW larvae will be found in the area of damage.  As yet, no injury to peppers has been reported.

Pumpkins and Winter Squash

Cucurbit downy mildew (CDM) should be considered active in all parts of the state on cucumbers and pumpkins.  For regional information on this important disease, see the Cucurbit Downy Mildew Forecast webpage:  http://cdm.ipmpipe.org/.    This forecast has  NJ at moderate risk of further infection as a result of new transport events through Tuesday 9/28.   It is advisable that all growers treat preventively for CDM on all potential host crops. CDM symptoms on the upper leaf surface include yellow areas that rapidly turn necrotic (photo at far left).  Signs of dark sporulation on the lower leaf surface may be found in close association with leaf veins (photo at near left).

Melon aphid (see photo at left) populations may be present in pumpkin and winter squash fields.  This aphid builds to heavy populations that result in the deposition of sticky droppings on the surface of fruit (see photo at right).  If melon aphids appear in more than one sample site in a 10 site sample, consider treating to minimize the appearance of droppings.  Insecticides effective at managing this pest are found in the Pumpkin and Winter Squash section of the Commercial Vegetable Production Recommendations.

 

 

Allium Leaf Miner

Corn Earworm Management in Sweet Corn Needs Assessment Survey – One Final Time!!

Dr. Kelly Hamby, Associate Professor/Extension Specialist with the Department of Entomology at University of Maryland, is leading a team of researchers (including Rutgers IPM personnel) who have developed a survey to prioritize research and extension efforts for improving corn earworm management in sweet corn throughout the Northeast. We appreciate your participation in this survey and will use results to develop a grant proposal to try to get federal funding to address these needs.

*These recommendations are based on regional catches.  Adhere to tighter spray schedules if indicated by local trap catches.  Synthetic pyrethroids alone should NOT be used for corn earworm (CEW) protection on silking corn, or for fall armyworm (FAW) management at any stage.  Control with these materials is very inconsistent.  Utilize materials in IRAC groups 5 and 28, or combination products that include IRAC group 28 for best control.  See the Sweet Corn section of the 2020-21 Commercial Vegetable Production Guide for selections.

 

Cole Crops

Fall plantings of cole crops are well underway at this time, and are frequently infested by imported cabbageworm (ICW) and diamondback moth (DBM) larvae.  At this time, cabbage looper (CL-photo at left) and cross striped cabbage worm (CSCW-photo at right) are also causing injury to these crops, with CSCW becoming more common.

Check 5 consecutive plants each in 10 random locations throughout the planting.  Consider treating if caterpillars are found on 10% or more plants that are in the 0-9 true leaf stage.  From 9-leaf to the early head stage (in broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage) infestations up to 20% may be tolerated.  Once heads begin to form, a 5% threshold should be observed to protect the marketable portion of the plant.  For leafy greens such as collards and kale, 10% plants infested is the threshold throughout.

Some populations of DBM are resistant to carbamate and synthetic pyrethroid insecticides.  The lack of DBM control with these insecticides has been noted in NJ previously.  It is important to distinguish between common cole crop pests for this reason.  DBM larvae grow to a length of approximately 0.5”, and taper toward both ends (see photo at right).  These caterpillars thrash violently when disturbed.  Newer chemistries that specifically target caterpillar pests are effective against DBM as well as all other caterpillar pests of cole crops, including beet armyworm (BAW-see photo at left), another species with exhibiting pyrethroid resistance.  These materials include (active ingredient – trade name (IRAC* code)):

Peppers

Pepper weevil

Besides the two farms in East Vineland, as far as known, there are no other infested farms.  The economics of attempted weevil control may not be worthwhile considering the time of year.

Beet armyworm (BAW) captures are fairly low in southern NJ pheromone traps.  However, BAW larvae were discovered causing serious damage to a field of sugar beets near East Vineland last week (see photo at right).   This pest can attack peppers, and growers and scouts should check for the presence of heavily damaged leaves near terminal growth on pepper plants.  BAW larvae will be found in the area of damage.  As yet, no injury to peppers has been reported.

Pumpkins and Winter Squash

Cucurbit downy mildew (CDM) should be considered active in all parts of the state on cucumbers and pumpkins.  For regional information on this important disease, see the Cucurbit Downy Mildew Forecast webpage:  http://cdm.ipmpipe.org/.    This forecast has  NJ at low risk of further infection as a result of new transport events through Tuesday 9/21, however the rain forecast for late this week will increase infection from local sources.    It is advisable that all growers treat preventively for CDM on all potential host crops. CDM symptoms on the upper leaf surface include yellow areas that rapidly turn necrotic (photo at far left).  Signs of dark sporulation on the lower leaf surface may be found in close association with leaf veins (photo at near left).

Phytophthora fruit rot (see photo at left) is causing significant crop loss in a number of fields.  There is no effective form of chemical control for this disease at this stage.  Growers are now removing fruit from fields. Avoid harvesting fruit in and near areas showing obvious signs of Phytophthora.   Fruit that may appear solid in the field can develop rot while in bins, resulting in more damaged fruit.

 

 

Melon aphid (see photo at left) populations may be present in pumpkin and winter squash fields.  This aphid builds to heavy populations that result in the deposition of sticky droppings on the surface of fruit (see photo at right).  If melon aphids appear in more than one sample site in a 10 site sample, consider treating to minimize the appearance of droppings.  Insecticides effective at managing this pest are found in the Pumpkin and Winter Squash section of the Commercial Vegetable Production Recommendations.

 

 

Allium Leaf Miner

Allium leaf miner (ALM) adults should be active now, or within the next several days.  As these flies emerge, they will seek out mates and begin laying eggs in allium foliage.

Growers should consider initiating (continuing) the control method of their choice at this time.  Affected crops include chives, scallions, garlic, onions and leeks.  Look for neat rows of white spots descending from the upper tips of allium leaves (see photo at left).  Initial injury often occurs on the tallest leaves.  Under warmer, less breezy conditions, adults may be seen near the tips of leaves (see photo of adults at lower right).  Click on photos to enlarge the images.

Floating row covers, kept on until this flight ends will help minimize access to plants.  Insecticide applications targeting adults may be helpful as well, although weekly sprays may not completely eliminate foliar injury.  Spinosyn materials (Radiant, Entrust (OMRI approved)), pyrethroids (Mustang Maxx, Warrior), neonicotinoids (Scorpion, Venom), the diamide Exirel (section 2ee recommendation) and the insect growth regulator Trigard are labeled for  leaf miner control.

Adult activity and observations of feeding will be reported on in the IPM Update as they occur.  At this time, all growers should respond to the second adult generation.
