Proposed Importation of Apples from China
A proposed rule is open for public comment that would allow the importation of apples into US markets from China.
A pest risk assessment has identified 21 pests that are on US quarantine lists which could be introduced in/on apples from China. Assurances have been made that fruit will be inspected prior to harvest for signs of infestation and fumigated prior to entrance into the US. However, the importation of fruit increases the likelihood that pests, such as the Oriental Fruit Fly, the plum fruit moth and the summer fruit tortrix, could be accidentally introduced and become established.

Plastic Pesticide Container Recycling Earns Pesticide Core Credit
The NJ Dept. of Ag, Helena Chemical, and the Cumberland County Solid Waste Complex are offering a series dates for free plastic pesticide container recycling disposal. These are offered to agricultural, professional and commercial applicators holding a NJDEP Pesticide Applicators License. State, county and municipal government agencies may also participate. Spread the word and recruit participants for this free service – we are hoping to exceed last year’s collections.
The NJ Dept. of Ag will be on-site to inspect the containers and issue one Core Credit to license holders who follow the processing guidelines. To receive Credit, participants must bring their Pesticide License and prepare the containers. Core credits will not be issued to participants who do not prepare containers. Dates and locations are listed below.

Cluster Thinning Effects on Cabernet Sauvignon and C. Franc Yield and Wine Quality

Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc can produce excellent wine grapes and wine in New Jersey, but the effect of cluster thinning on optimal yields has not been established. This study suggests that high quality grapes and wines can be made from these varieties under various climatic conditions and without the necessity of economically unsustainably low yields that can result from cluster thinning.

New Blueberry Fruit IPM Program Associate Amy Raudenbush
Welcome Amy Raudenbush! Amy is now the Fruit IPM Program Associate working in blueberries. A native of New Jersey, Amy joined the Fruit IPM Program this past Tuesday, July 8. After getting a Bachelors degree from Rutgers and working in the Entomology Department, she received an MS in Entomology from Kansas State University, and worked as a research associate in IPM programming.Amy is now visiting with growers and assessing SWD populations, along with other pests. Amy is stationed in the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Offices of Atlantic County, and will be able to be reached at (609)625-0056 or by her cell number at (609)313-2406.
