Fruit IPM for July 26, 2017

Peach:

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB): Adults are present at two sites in Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. Numbers are very low, and in both cases the orchard consists of weedy ground cover.

Oriental Fruit Moth (OFM): Third brood treatments are over in southern counties, and finishing up in northern counties. Adult activity as measured by trap counts is extremely low. Application timings are as follows:

Thrips: Some thrips were seen this past week in one orchard in Hunterdon County. Thrips like hot dry weather and a proximity to flowering weeds. There were many flowering weeds in this orchard. While prolonged hot dry weather is always favorable to thrips, the current unsettled weather pattern is not. If you notice any thrips in the coming weeks, then consider Delegate @ 6-7 oz/ac, or Lannate SP @ 1#/A (or LV @1.5-3 pt/A). The addition of a non-ionic surfactant can help improve control. Delegate has a 1 day PHI for peach/nectarine, and Lannate has a 4 day PHI on peach.

Apple:

Codling Moth (CM): Additional applications now need to be based on trap counts or insect pressure. If the trap count is greater than 5 males per trap, then additional applications are required. We have a number of orchards in both southern and northern counties where trap captures exceed 10 moths per trap. Therefore this remains a key insect which will require additional treatments.

Blueberry:

What Is A “Clean-Up Spray?” Every year I hear that term from growers who finish up their Bluecrop, have no later varieties, and put a final insecticide over everything. At this point, If You Don’t Have Fruit, There Is Nothing To Spray For. If all fruit has been harvested, there are only 2 insects left – maybe. The first is the Sharpnosed Leafhopper, and it is still way too early to treat for that. The second is Putnam Scale, and only if you had 1st generation crawlers, and it’s also too early for that one.

Sharpnosed Leafhopper (SNLH): We are still between 1st and 2nd generations. It is too early to treat for the second flight.

Putnam Scale: We are between 1st and 2nd generations, and no crawlers are present at this time. On those few farms that have them, we should start to see second generation crawlers during the first part of August.

Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD): Trap captures of adult flies continue to increase. It is STILL important to maintain sprays on the last of the Bluecrop, even if machine picking. Elliott and other late varieties also still need to be protected.

Blueberry Maggot (BBM): Trap captures are very low, and close to the same levels as seen last week.

Oriental Beetle (OB): The adult flight is nearing the end. While significant numbers of adults continue to be found, treatments are no longer practical.
