Fruit IPM for 9/15/21

Blueberries:

Putnam Scale: As of the past week, scale crawlers have tailed off. For all practical purposes, treatments for the second generation are done.

Sharpnosed Leafhopper (SNLH): We are calling the second generation trap peak occurring over the last week to 10 days. Therefore it is time to treat this generation if you have not already done so. Use any of the sucking insect materials listed in the 2021 Commercial Blueberry Pest Control Recommendations For New Jersey. Suggested materials include Diazinon, Imidan and any neonicotinoid such as Assail, Actara and Admire. Pyrethroids are also labeled, but are slightly less effective.

Peach:

Oriental Fruit Moth: In most areas this is no longer an issue since most fruit is off the tree. In northern counties there are a couple of farms where trap counts exceed 5 moths per trap. If harvest for very late varieties is 10 days or more away then these blocks should be treated.

Peach Tree Borers: Unless you placed mating disruption dispensers in the spring, now is the time to treat for peach tree borers. For all practical purposes this is likely the last season that Lorsban will be able to be used. Asana, Mustang, Mustang Maxx, and Warrior are also labeled for borer control. However, for effective control you must apply the material dilute with a directed trunk application, or handgun and under high pressure.

Apple:

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs (BMSB): Populations are low in southern orchards, but slightly higher in northern counties. Three farms in Hunterdon and Warren Counties had insect pressure that merits treatment, especially along field edges that border the woods. Pyrethroid insecticides applied every 7 days (or more often) are required, especially if heavy rains wash off previous applications.

Codling Moth (CM): Trap captures have been very low except on 2 locations in northern counties. CM should be treated any time that trap captures exceed 5 males per trap and picking is greater than 10 days away.

Grapes:

Drosophila: native drosophilids and Spotted Wing Drosophila are all present in vineyards. Since there is a direct link between sour rot and drosophila infestations, these insects should be controlled.

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF): Growers are seeing “high” numbers in vineyards, especially while harvesting with machines. At this stage it is best not to worry about pre-harvest treatments if you are close to harvest. Rather wait until just after picking to start treating, so you don’t have to be concerned with preharvest intervals, especially since multiple applications may be needed if populations are high.
