Fruit IPM For 08/02/18

Peach:

Oriental Fruit Moth (OFM): Third flight adults are present and trap counts are low on most farms, except in isolated areas in northern counties. The timing for 3rd generation treatments is done in southern counties, but ongoing in northern counties. Please see table below for timing:

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB): Trap counts and activity are about the same as during the previous week. The highest counts are in Hunterdon County with 1 farm having a total count of 7 BMSB/trap (2 adults and 5 nymphs). There is no trap or treatment threshold in peaches. Growers with positive counts should be on a BMSB protective schedule or using border sprays every 7 days.

Apple (and Pear):

Codling Moth (CM): Trap counts have increased over the past week. Counts on some farms in northern counties exceed 30 males per trap. Trap counts in southern orchards are also above the 5 male per trap threshold. Treatments for the second generation in southern counties should have been applied last week, and now in northern counties. If trap counts still exceed 5 males per trap then additional treatments are needed. A third generation will need to be treated by early to mid August, see dates below. This is the time of year when generations can over lap, making timing very difficult. Make sure to rotate insecticides and treat on a 7 day schedule if insect pressure is high, and/or if rains weather off previous applications.

Grape:

Grape Root Borer (GRB): Adults have been emerging for the past several weeks. Populations are very light and very few pupal cases are being found in vineyards from emerging adults. See previous newsletters for treatments. A provisional treatment threshold from the University of Kentucky is to treat if at least 5% of the vines are infested with GRB. Unfortunately this takes most of the season to measure, since pupal cases from emerging adults have to be counted on marked vines every week, starting in late June. In our counts this year, we see very few pupal cases, or signs from emerging adults. Trap counts are presented below, just to show when adults emerge, but this is likely more of a record from emergence in the surrounding woodlands and wild grape.

Scouting Calendar Tree Fruit Southern Counties

The following table is intended as an aid for orchard scouting. It should not be used to time pesticide applications. Median dates for pest events and crop phenology are displayed. These dates are compiled from observations made since 1995 in Gloucester County. Events in northern New Jersey should occur 7-10 days later.

Blueberry

Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD): This is still the insect of concern on Elliott and other late varieties, where 7 day schedules still have to be maintained, especially under high populations. Last week we showed how the population spread over the season as measured by the percent of positive trap captures. As this happens, the population is also increasing in density as measured by the number of flies per trap. In Atlantic County our average trap count was 15.2 with a high of 75. In Burlington County trap counts have decreased slightly our average trap count was 8.4 per trap with a high of 39.

Average and Max of Male SWD in Traps - 2018

Blueberry Maggot (BBM): This week trap counts have increased in both counties. In Atlantic County average trap count was of 0.13 with a high of 6 BBM. In Burlington County average trap count was 0.49 with a high of 19. BBM populations often increase later in the season, but averages are often skewed by the higher populations emerging in areas no longer receiving insecticides for SWD. If growers are treating Elliott and BBM counts are over 1 per trap, be aware that while Delegate may be a great choice for SWD control, it is weaker against high populations of blueberry maggot.

Oriental Beetle (OB): This week’s traps have decreased again. The Atlantic maximum per trap was 500, and the Burlington maximum was 6075 per trap. Any treatments applied during August or later are a waste of money.

Sharpnosed Leafhopper (SNLH): This week trap counts have slightly increased in both counties. While we expect an increase during the late season, this is only a slight variation and does not qualify for the start of the second generation. This is still several weeks away.
