At the New Jersey Vegetable Growers Association Annual Meeting this past February in Atlantic City a group of over 80 people representing researchers, extension personnel, growers, producers and basil suppliers, fungicide and seed companies gathered to discuss current efforts in the fight against basil downy mildew.
The ongoing research and extension efforts are part of a large, four-year 1.8 million dollar SCRI Grant funded by the USDA and headed by Jim Simon, in the Department of Plant Biology located in New Brunswick and Andy Wyenandt located at the Rutgers Agricultural Research and Extension Center (RAREC) near Bridgeton, New Jersey. Collaborators in the project include researchers, extension personnel, and graduate students from Rutgers, Cornell University, University of Massachusetts, and the University of Florida. The two day workshop focused on updates and reports from the project collaborators and included a tour and update of the breeding efforts currently being done the Rutgers Breeding Team.
